Gilbert X. Nieves, portrayed by Santos, is a minor character in The Sopranos.
History[]
Gilbert was a customer of Matush Zhia, having once bought cocaine from him, only to find that it was almost entirely stretched with baby laxative powder.
Knowing that Matush frequented the Crazy Horse Club to sell ectsasy, Gilbert waited for him at the bar one evening and eventually saw him and another man walk past into the club's office. Gilbert follows them inside and threatens Matush with a knife, accusing Matush of ripping him off and demanding that the money he paid is returned. The other man, Kamal, tries to interfere, but Gilbert tells him to stay out of it and between him and Matush. When Gilbert turns back around, Kamal strikes him with granite ashtray. Disoriented, Matush and Kamal overpower Gilbert, toppling him on the table to the floor; Kamal proceeds to disarm Gilbert by biting his hand and is then fatally stabbed multiple times in the chest by Matush. Club manager Adriana La Cerva abruptly walks into the room moments later and shocked to discover the dead man inside. Matush and Kamal manage to bag up Gilbert's body and sneak it out through the back entrance while Adriana assists in cleaning up the scene of the crime. Gilbert's body is dumped in the Atlantic Ocean, but the body bag breaks loose, causing the body to floats up at near Jetty #4 at a beach in Long Branch, where it is discovered by a Sea Scout Troop from Montclair. Adriana is questioned by the local police department, who received info that Gilbert was last spotted at the Crazy Horse, but she feigns ignorance and does not implicate Matush and Kamal.
Some months later, the FBI gains an interest in the case after seeing footage of police detectives showing up at the club. The FBI took over the murder investigation as they had been looking for illegal activity at the Crazy Horse in hopes they could use it to implicate Adriana and force her into becoming an informant on the DiMeo crime family, of which her fiancé Christopher Moltisanti was a made man. The FBI has Gilbert's body examined by a coroner in Towaco, finding that one hand still had traces of an infrared stamp used in the Crazy Horse, as Gilbert smudged several papers while fighting with Matush and Kamal. Newark FBI Chief Frank Cubitoso, along with Agents Dwight Harris and Robyn Sanseverino confronted Adriana with this evidence, as well as pictures of Gilbert's bloated corpse, to make her confess to the events that led to the murder, during which she identified Matush and Kamal as the killers. Given her testimony, the FBI can't get her for homicide, but are able to charge her with obstruction of justice in the same crime.
